Now that’s a picture worth 1,000 words.

The St. Bonaventure basketball team’s Atlantic 10 championship win over VCU was overshadowed by a bizarre incident between a security guard and a Bonnies videographer during the team’s celebration.

Video shows the Bonnies begin to celebrate on the court as the clock expires on the 74-65 victory, when Nathan DeSutter – the digital media director for the St. Bonaventure athletic department – began to move toward the group and film. A security guard swiftly stood in front of him to prevent him from getting closer, but DeSutter dodged him to get on the court and continue shooting.

As the players migrated toward the sideline to stand on the barricade and salute their fans, DeSutter was put in a chokehold and forcefully ushered back to the stands.

Players and Bona staff members quickly followed to tell security that DeSutter was part of the athletic department. He was then allowed back on the court to shoot the trophy celebration and cutting down of the nets.

“One of the most bizarre sports photos you will ever see: A security guard at the Atlantic 10 Title Game put a cameraman in a chokehold as he was filming St. Bonaventure’s on-court celebration,” wrote MSG Networks’ Jeff Eisenband of the since-viral photo, captured by University of Dayton senior Griffin Quinn.

The Atlantic 10 is now investigating the postgame incident, a conference spokesman told The Buffalo News.

“We’re aware and we’re looking into it with Dayton,” said assistant commissioner of the league Drew Dickerson.

Quinn, who took the photo of the incident, provided some extra context in a thread on Twitter. He said that he wasn’t sure what DeSutter’s credentials granted him or what his limitations were, but that the team videographer had been on the court already during parts of the game.

“Other media personnel had assigned seats in the stands,” Quinn pointed out, later adding that the security guard must’ve thought DeSutter had rushed onto the court after the buzzer rang, which was prohibited for media members with assigned seating in the stands.

Asked for a statement from The Buffalo News, a St. Bonaventure athletic department spokesman said the school had no comment.
