Alabama, DeVonta Smith rout Ohio State to claim national championship

Alabama has another national championship and coach Nick Saban now stands alone.

The top-seeded Crimson Tide defeated No. 3 Ohio State, 52-24, in the College Football Playoff championship game Monday night at Hard Rock Stadium. The victory gives Alabama its 18th national championship and the seventh for Saban overall, moving him ahead of legendary Crimson Tide coach Paul “Bear” Bryant.

Heisman Trophy winning receiver DeVonta Smith put on an absolute show with 12 catches for 215 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half. Alabama (12-0) led 38-17 at the break.

Smith was forced out of the game with a hand injury with 6:01 left in the third quarter and did not return.

Ohio State (7-1) pulled within 38-24 late in the third quarter, but Alabama scored on its next two possessions to put the game away. Mac Jones threw for five touchdowns and Najee Harris added three scores, two on the ground for the Crimson Tide.
